Self Care Isn’t Selfish, It’s Necessary
How are you feeling now Christmas has been and gone and the New Year celebrations are over?
It’s back to the ‘norm’ and it’s also that time of year when we often feel a slump in our energy. It’s common to catch a cold, turn to comfort food and lose focus on taking care of ourselves.
It happens so easily.
It is at this point, when you feel less inclined to take care of yourself that you really need to make self care a priority. It’s a little like the analogy of putting on your life jacket first in an airplane emergency, before trying to help others. If you’re not fit and healthy you can’t take proper care of those around you.
If you have responsibility to take care of others such as your children, family or elderly relatives, you have a responsibility to take care of yourself too. It’s not time to put blame or guilt on yourself if you haven’t always done this.
It’s understandable. Often carers put others before themselves to their own detriment. It doesn’t have to be this way.
Imagine if you could take care of all those around you feeling energised, vibrant, clear-minded and resilient. Practising simple self care can be an important part of your holistic health routine. It can bring you more balance and harmony, so you are capable of giving the very best of yourself to your loved ones.
Now, you might be thinking - How can I include more self care into my already very busy life?
Here are some easy ideas to practise more self care regularly:
Regularly enjoy a relaxing bath
Get a massage or a Complementary Therapy
Eat wholesome nutritious meals
Hydrate fully throughout the day
Avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine and sugar
Take time out for yourself, book yourself in for some me-time
Socialise with caring and supportive friends and family
Take gentle exercise like walking in the woods or around a park
Enjoy your hobbies and interests
Practice kind self talk - dismiss negative self talk and be kind to yourself
The key to self care is to not wait until you feel the need for it.
If you start to feel low energy, low mood, comfort eating - intervene quickly to bring yourself back to optimal levels. Ideally, include self care every week in your holistic health routine.
For instance, plan to exercise 3-4 times each week such as every other day. Make time for your hobbies on a weekend. Plan your meals for the week ahead so that there’s no last minute Take Aways or Fast Food binges. Take a relaxing bath a couple of times every week with detoxing Epsom Salts and Essential Oils. Take a walk with friends once a week and book an appointment for a relaxing and immune boosting Massage once per week.
How nice does all that sound?
Give it a try. Make it a habit to incorporate self care every week and you’ll rapidly feel the benefits and it will become intuitive to make these rituals a priority.

So #Lent has arrived and with it there will be many people who have made a conscious decision to change and will have given something up. For me, as well as choosing to remove sugar from my life – which will be a challenge, self -confessed sugar addict here, I usually make the decision to take the time to #payitforward and so 40 Days of Giving was created. 40 DAYS OF GIVING is the opportunity for you to also join me in paying it forward. Is there someone you know who has decided to make a life-lengthening decision and hasRead More

Do you feel overwhelmed and wish that the world would stop so you can get off just for a little while? Are you irritable and snappy with your family and friends? Does it feel like you have a perpetual cold that you just can’t seem to shift? Or is that Stomach acid just not going with the Ant-acids you’re gobbling like Smarties? I’ve been there and I know how you feel…. Before I worked for myself I worked in the NHS for a Primary Care Trust. In 2010 the Government decided that they would close the PCTs and transfer theRead More
As I sit here writing this, it’s pouring down with rain and looking more like October than July. I’d like to lay blame at the builders across the street, ever since they started to work on the roof it’s done an awful lot of raining…. Anyway, onto the purpose of what I’m writing about this Tuesday afternoon in July – UV Awareness. From as long as I can remember I’ve always tried to get a tan. Sitting out in the garden with my mum, just lying there, which at the young age of around 6 years old was quite boring!Read More
Balance & Harmony – It’s all about Reiki Reiki, you hear lots of people talking about it nowadays, but what is it? For me Reiki, pronounced Ray-Key, is a way of opening up to new depths of Spiritual Awareness. It’s not a Religion or a belief system, but a method of natural healing. I am attuned to the Usui practice of Reiki, which was re-discovered by Dr. Mikao Usui in Japan in the late 1800’s. Today, Reiki is a simple yet powerful way that you can bring both physical and emotional balance and harmony into your life, especially during stressfulRead More
Warm blessings to you at the start of 2016! I hope your Christmas and New Year festivities treated you well and that you didn’t suffer from too much over indulgence………. January is traditionally seen as the time to detox. We see so many adverts now of charities recruiting Dryathletes and various slimming programmes encouraging us to use this product/service to help lose weight. This made me think, is it time to Detox or is it time to make a permanent change? I’m not sure about the detox but certainly my body needs a break from all the rich food andRead More
Before I go in depth about the benefits of Indian Head Massage I thought I’d explain a little bit about stress and the affects that it can have on our daily life. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, stress is ‘a pressure of load, weight, some adverse force or influence’, other definitions include ‘anxiety, burden, hassle, nervous tension, trauma’. Nowadays stress is not something that only business executives suffer from, it can come from many different sources and be equally debilitating in every case. Stress causes many physiological changes within the body. The adrenal glands produce extra adrenaline when underRead More
